37 Miners Feared Dead, 25 Hospitalised After Suspected Gas Exposure in Plateau
At least 37 miners have reportedly lost their lives following suspected carbon monoxide exposure at an underground mining site in Zurak, Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The tragic incident is said to have occurred in the early hours of Tuesday while the miners were extracting zinc from the site. According to eyewitness accounts, toxic gas suddenly filled the underground tunnels during the operation, triggering a collapse and trapping workers inside.
The victims were believed to have inhaled the fumes while carrying out routine mining activities. Most of those affected were young men aged between 20 and 35.
Twenty-five other miners who survived the exposure have been rushed to a nearby health facility, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Confirming the development, the Executive Chairman of Wase LGA, Hamisu Anani, described the incident as tragic and deeply worrisome, particularly as it occurred during the holy month of Ramadan. He noted that many of the victims were observing the fasting period at the time of the incident.
Anani said the mining site has since been secured to prevent further casualties and to allow for a thorough investigation into the cause of the suspected gas leak.
He also called on both the Plateau State and Federal Governments to support the affected families, stressing that the tragedy has left the Zurak community in mourning.
Meanwhile, the member representing Wase State Constituency said efforts are underway to provide assistance to victims and ensure a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
