Wike’s New 2027 Assignment: Tinubu Puts Rivers and the FCT in His Hands

The former Rivers governor could become one of the most unusual figures in Nigeria’s 2027 election — a PDP member helping to build the road to an APC president’s second term.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appears set to give Nyesom Wike a clearly defined role in the 2027 presidential campaign: mobilising support for the President in two territories where the former Rivers governor believes he has considerable political influence — Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory.

The emerging arrangement is politically unusual. Wike remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, yet he is serving as FCT Minister under an APC-led Federal Government and has repeatedly declared his support for Tinubu’s re-election.

Now, according to THISDAY, the former governor is expected to coordinate the presidential campaign effort in Rivers and the FCT without necessarily becoming part of the APC’s formal hierarchy. That distinction matters.

Wike has already rejected the idea that he needs the title of Director-General of Tinubu’s campaign council. In August, he said he would have declined the position if offered, arguing that what matters is the ability to deliver votes rather than occupy a prestigious campaign office.

His message has remained remarkably consistent:

Give me the territory. I will deliver the votes.

The Rivers Question

Rivers is the bigger political prize. Wike governed the state for eight years and retains a formidable political network. But his relationship with his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and the wider political structure remains complicated.

The former governor now wants Tinubu to win Rivers in 2027. That creates an extraordinary political equation: a PDP member seeking to mobilise a state governed by a PDP politician for an APC president. Whether that machinery can work without producing another internal political confrontation remains one of the major questions of the coming election.

And Then There Is Abuja 

The FCT presents a different opportunity. As Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Wike has overseen an aggressive infrastructure and urban-renewal programme. Supporters have already begun arguing that his record could help Tinubu politically in Abuja.

Wike himself has previously declared that he intends to help deliver the FCT for Tinubu. The proposed coordination role therefore formalises what he has already been saying publicly.

The APC Problem

But Wike’s growing role has created discomfort within the APC. The party’s governors have opposed political arrangements they believe could create parallel structures or weaken APC candidates in the 2027 elections.

Wike’s answer has been equally blunt. His support, he insists, is for Tinubu’s presidential ambition, not an agreement to stop the PDP from contesting governorship, National Assembly or state assembly elections.

That position has exposed the central contradiction of his political strategy. Can Wike campaign for an APC presidential candidate while remaining free to support candidates outside the APC at other levels?

The Political Experiment

That may be the most fascinating part of the 2027 election. Wike is attempting to operate outside the conventional boundaries of party politics — supporting a president from another party while maintaining his own political identity and network.

Tinubu, meanwhile, appears willing to use that political capital without necessarily forcing Wike to formally join the APC.

It is a pragmatic arrangement.

It is also risky.

If it works, Wike could emerge as one of the most consequential political operators of the 2027 election.

If it fails, the experiment could deepen the already visible fault lines between him and the APC establishment.

For now, however, the message from Abuja appears clear:

Tinubu wants Wike fighting for the presidential vote in Rivers and the FCT.

And Wike appears ready to accept the assignment.

The 2027 election may therefore produce one of Nigerian politics’ most unusual alliances:

A PDP politician, operating outside the APC, helping an APC president seek another term — while insisting that his political independence remains intact.
