Ndume Commends Tinubu, Zulum Over Return of Nigerian Refugees from Cameroon
Former Senate Leader, Mohammed Ali Ndume, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, for their roles in facilitating the return and resettlement of Nigerians displaced by Boko Haram and Islamic State West African Province (ISWAP) attacks who had taken refuge in Cameroon.
The return of the refugees followed the implementation of a long-standing tripartite agreement involving the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Borno State Government, the Government of Cameroon, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The agreement, signed in Yaounde in 2017, outlines a framework for the voluntary, safe and dignified repatriation of Nigerian refugees who fled insurgency in parts of Borno State.
In a statement issued in Abuja, Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District, described the exercise as a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to rebuilding communities devastated by insurgency and restoring the dignity of affected citizens.
According to him, the successful repatriation of Nigerians from the Minawao refugee camp in Cameroon back to Gwoza Local Government Area underscores the effectiveness of collaboration between the Federal Government, the Borno State Government, the Cameroonian authorities and the UNHCR.
Ndume further praised the Federal Government for initiating the resettlement programme and lauded the Borno State Government for its active role in reintegrating the returnees after more than a decade in displacement.
