Gunmen Kill 13 in Fresh Attack on Benue Community, Police Yet to Confirm
No fewer than 13 persons have been killed following a fresh attack by gunmen suspected to be armed herders on a community in Benue State.
An eyewitness told reporters that the assailants emerged from a nearby mountain and stormed the community, firing sporadically into the air to instil fear and create panic among residents. The sudden gunfire reportedly forced villagers to flee for safety before the attackers went on to set market stalls ablaze.
The witness further disclosed that several women were abducted during the attack, after which the gunmen retreated towards the mountain area from where they had launched the assault.
As of the time of filing this report, the Benue State Police Command has not confirmed the incident. Repeated attempts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, Udeme Edet, were unsuccessful, as calls and messages sent to her phone were not responded to.
