FG Raises Alarm Over Sabotage of Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Other Critical Infrastructure
The Federal Government has sounded a fresh warning over what it calls escalating sabotage of key national infrastructure, with the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway identified as one of the worst-hit projects.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Thursday, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, decried what he described as persistent vandalism, illegal activities, and indiscriminate waste disposal targeting federal roads and bridges across the country.
Umahi described the trend as both “alarming and unsustainable,” noting that the ministry is engaged in what he termed a “daily battle” to safeguard public assets from destruction.
According to him, protective installations along parts of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway have been repeatedly tampered with, cut, and stolen despite increased security measures. He further revealed that essential construction materials, including dowel bars used in reinforcing concrete structures, have also been removed by vandals—disrupting construction timelines and increasing project costs.
The minister warned that continued attacks on public infrastructure would not only drain scarce national resources but also delay critical development projects meant to boost economic growth and connectivity.
“If we fail to protect this infrastructure, we will keep spending money on repeated repairs. That is not healthy for our society,” Umahi said.
He stressed that while the President remains committed to delivering transformative projects nationwide, citizens must play an active role in protecting public property.
“The President is working tirelessly to complete these projects. We all have a responsibility to ensure they are preserved,” he added.
