Makoko Demolition: Lagos Assembly Panel Concludes Probe as Communities Differ on Compensation, Relocation
The Lagos State House of Assembly ad-hoc committee set up by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa to investigate the demolition of structures in Makoko, Sogunro and Oko-Agbon communities has concluded its inquiry, with affected residents presenting differing demands on compensation and relocation.
At the committee’s final sitting held on Thursday, March 5, 2026, representatives of the three waterfront communities outlined their positions on how the government should address the impact of the demolition exercise.
Speaking on behalf of the Egun community in Makoko, the Alase, Francis Agoyon, said residents displaced by the demolition would prefer permanent relocation to another settlement rather than monetary compensation. According to him, relocation would provide a more sustainable solution for affected families whose homes and livelihoods have been disrupted.
The Baale of Makoko also supported the call for relocation instead of financial compensation. However, he urged the state government to clearly indicate where displaced residents would be resettled and to properly define the boundaries of the demolition affecting Makoko, Sogunro and Oko-Agbon communities.
In contrast, representatives of the Sogunro community demanded financial compensation for affected residents. They proposed that each person impacted by the demolition should receive about N10 million, arguing that the average cost of constructing a bamboo house in the community is around N4 million.
Members of the committee noted the differing positions presented by the communities and indicated that their findings and recommendations would be compiled into a report to be submitted to the Lagos State House of Assembly for further consideration.
