Prophet Godwin Ikuru Declares Interest in Lagos Governorship Race Ahead of 2027

Prophet Godwin Ikuru, the General Overseer of Jehovah Eye Salvation Ministry, with branches in Lagos and Asaba, has publicly declared his intention to contest the 2027 Lagos State governorship election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Prophet Ikuru, who is also a chieftain of the ruling party and a member of the 2023 Presidential Campaign Council for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, made the declaration during recent consultations with political stakeholders and supporters.

According to him, the time has come for a non-Yoruba candidate to govern Lagos State, describing the state as a cosmopolitan city that belongs to all Nigerians.

“Lagos is a home for everyone. It is a state that accommodates people from all tribes and backgrounds. I believe the time has come for a non-Yoruba governor to emerge, and by the grace of God I am ready to serve Lagos State,” he said.

Prophet Ikuru explained that his ambition is driven by a desire to consolidate on the achievements of the current administration under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, whom he described as the best governor Lagos State has ever had.

He commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for what he described as remarkable progress in education, transportation, and healthcare, adding that his administration would build on these achievements.

“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has done very well for Lagos. In my opinion, he is the best governor Lagos State has had. My mission is to complement his efforts and continue the development trajectory of the state,” Ikuru stated.

Speaking about his development agenda, the cleric-turned-politician said his administration would focus on expanding road networks, building more hospitals, and improving critical infrastructure across the state.

He also promised to address issues surrounding the demolition of residential buildings, saying his government would pursue policies that protect citizens and ensure fairness.

“We will stop the unnecessary demolition of houses and bring sanity to the streets of Lagos. Governance must be humane and people-centered,” he said.

Prophet Ikuru also revealed that he had earlier informed Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, now President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, about his ambition.

According to him, when Tinubu asked what he desired politically, he made it clear that his goal was to become the next Governor of Lagos State.

“I supported Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the election. When he asked what I wanted, I told him I wanted to be the next governor of Lagos State,” he said.

The APC chieftain further disclosed that he has begun consultations across different political and community blocs within Lagos State ahead of the party’s primaries.

However, he emphasized that the ultimate decision lies with God and the democratic process within the party.

“I have started consultations across boards. At the end of the day, we will leave everything to God and the APC primary process,” he said.

The 2027 Lagos governorship race is expected to attract significant interest within the APC and other political parties as political alignments begin to take shape ahead of the election cycle.
