Tinubu Orders Security Chiefs to Relocate to Maiduguri After Deadly Bombings

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Nigeria’s top security chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, to take direct charge of operations following a devastating wave of suicide bombings in the city.

The attacks, which left at least 23 people dead and more than 100 others injured, prompted swift federal action aimed at strengthening on-ground coordination and response efforts.

In an official statement, Tinubu condemned the bombings as acts of terrorism, describing the situation as “profoundly upsetting.” He stressed that there is “no place in Nigeria where terrorists will find safety,” while calling for intensified efforts by security forces to confront and eliminate criminal elements operating in the region.

The coordinated explosions, which occurred on March 16, 2026, targeted crowded public locations, including a market, a hospital entrance, and other busy areas, making it one of the deadliest incidents in Maiduguri in recent years. Although no group has officially claimed responsibility, authorities suspect the involvement of jihadist groups such as Boko Haram, which has a long history of insurgent activity in the region.

The President also directed emergency response agencies to ensure adequate medical care for the injured, while reaffirming the government’s commitment to tracking down and neutralizing those responsible for the attacks.

Security presence across Maiduguri has since been heightened, with the relocation of service chiefs expected to improve coordination of military and intelligence operations as the federal government moves to curb the resurgence of extremist violence in the North-East.
