The Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Akeem Owoade, on Tuesday formally moved into the ancient Alaafin’s Palace in Oyo town, marking a significant moment nine months after his installation as the paramount traditional ruler of the historic Oyo Kingdom.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, Bode Durojaiye. According to the statement, the monarch’s relocation to the palace represents a symbolic and cultural milestone, reaffirming the deep-rooted traditions of the Yoruba people and the enduring heritage of the Oyo Empire.
Durojaiye described the Alaafin’s Palace as more than a historical monument, referring to it as a “living museum” that reflects the grandeur, sophistication and complexity of Yoruba culture. He noted that the palace complex is an architectural masterpiece made up of courtyards, halls and sacred shrines that have been carefully preserved over centuries, embodying the history and identity of the kingdom.
The statement further explained that every section of the palace carries profound cultural and spiritual significance. These include the Ile Orun, where the ancestors of past Alaafins are honoured, and the Oju Oba, the traditional court where the Alaafin receives visitors, adjudicates matters and engages with his subjects. Durojaiye added that the monarch’s move into the palace underscores his commitment to upholding the customs, values and responsibilities associated with the revered throne.
The transition is expected to usher in a new phase in the reign of Oba Owoade, as he fully assumes his role from the historic seat of authority that has for generations served as the heart of governance, culture and tradition in Oyo Kingdom.
