Alleged Sexual Assault of Women at Ozoro Festival in Delta
The Ozoro community in Delta State has come under intense public attention following reports of sexual assault and harassment of young women during a local cultural festival.
Police authorities confirmed the arrest of a community leader, Omorede Sunday, along with four other suspects in connection with the incident, which occurred in Oruamudhu community, Isoko North Local Government Area.
The arrests followed the circulation of disturbing videos on social media showing groups of men attacking and forcibly stripping women during the event. The footage has sparked widespread outrage, with many Nigerians condemning the act and calling for justice for the victims.
Preliminary reports indicate that as part of the festival’s tradition, women were expected to remain indoors during specific hours. However, some individuals allegedly took advantage of the situation to target women found outside, leading to the assaults.
The Delta State Police Command stated that the suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation. Authorities also assured the public that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals involved.
While there have been claims describing the incident as rape, officials say investigations are still underway to determine the full extent of the offences.
The incident has triggered national concern, with advocacy groups and citizens demanding accountability and stronger safeguards to prevent violence against women, especially during public and cultural events.
