Anambra Begins Statewide Measles–Rubella Vaccination Drive for Over Two Million Children
The Anambra State Government, working in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has rolled out a statewide measles and rubella vaccination campaign expected to reach more than two million children.
The immunisation exercise will take place from February 4 to February 15, 2026, and is designed for children between the ages of nine months and 14 years. Health authorities say the campaign is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen disease prevention and safeguard child health across the state.
Vaccinations will be administered at about 330 designated points, including public schools, markets, churches and other community centres, to ensure easy access for families. Officials have assured parents and caregivers that the vaccines are provided at no cost and are both safe and effective, with administration handled by trained and licensed health workers.
Measles and rubella are highly contagious illnesses that can result in serious complications, particularly among children. State health officials stressed that widespread immunisation remains one of the most effective ways to prevent outbreaks. UNICEF has reaffirmed its support for the initiative, calling on community leaders, parents and other stakeholders to help ensure that every eligible child is reached.
To maximise coverage, vaccination teams will also carry out outreach activities in healthcare facilities, places of worship, schools and hard-to-reach areas, including riverine communities, throughout the campaign period.
