APC Convention 2026: Yilwatda Re-Elected Chairman, Basiru Emerges National Secretary
Professor Nentawe Yilwatda has been returned as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while Surajudeen Basiru emerged as the party’s National Secretary at its National Convention held Friday night at Eagle Square, Abuja.
The convention, which drew party leaders, delegates, and stakeholders from across the country, reaffirmed Yilwatda’s leadership following broad consultations across Nigeria’s geo-political zones. His return is seen as a move to consolidate internal party cohesion ahead of upcoming political engagements.
A former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Yilwatda first assumed the role of APC National Chairman in 2025. His initial emergence followed extensive negotiations among key party stakeholders, reflecting efforts to maintain regional balance and unity within the party’s structure.
His position was formally ratified earlier at a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. At the meeting, the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, nominated Yilwatda for the role, while the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, seconded the nomination.
Meanwhile, Basiru’s emergence as National Secretary signals a strategic reshaping of the party’s administrative leadership, with expectations that the new National Working Committee will steer the APC through a critical phase of governance and political consolidation.
The outcomes of the convention underscore the APC’s efforts to project stability, continuity, and strengthened internal coordination as it navigates Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
