The Nigerian Army has deployed a specialised Special Forces Intervention Battalion to Plateau State as part of renewed efforts to curb rising incidents of banditry, terrorism and other violent crimes in the North-Central region.
The deployment was ordered by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant-General Waidi Shaibu, following a resurgence of armed attacks, kidnappings and criminal activities across parts of the state. Multiple official sources confirmed the development on Tuesday.
According to a statement issued by Captain Chinonso Oteh, Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Operation Enduring Peace (JTF OPEP), the deployment is both urgent and strategic, aimed at strengthening existing security operations and restoring stability to affected communities.
The statement noted that the intervention battalion, a highly trained unit of the Nigerian Army, will carry out offensive and intelligence-driven operations targeting armed criminal groups threatening peace and security in Plateau State. The military said the move underscores its commitment to adopting a proactive approach to deter further attacks.
The troops were formally received at the Headquarters of 3 Division by senior commanders of Operation Enduring Peace, who charged them to remain resolute, disciplined and uncompromising in the execution of their mission.
Military authorities have also urged residents to remain calm despite increased troop movements and the deployment of heavy military equipment, assuring the public that the measures are solely aimed at enhancing security.
Plateau State has witnessed recurring security challenges in recent months, largely linked to banditry and violent crime, prompting repeated interventions by security agencies. The latest deployment signals an escalation of federal efforts to address the situation in collaboration with state and local authorities.
The Nigerian Army has called on residents to support ongoing operations by providing timely and credible intelligence to help identify and isolate criminal elements, stressing that community cooperation is vital to achieving lasting peace in the state.
