BREAKING: INEC Proposes N873.78 Billion for 2027 General Elections, Allocates Over N200 Billion to Election Technology

 

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has proposed a total budget of N873.78 billion for the conduct of the 2027 general elections.

 

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, presented the proposed budget before the joint committee of the Senate and House of Representatives on Electoral Matters, outlining the financial requirements needed to deliver what he described as credible, transparent, and technologically driven elections.

 

 

According to the Commission, the proposed sum is structured into five major components:

•N375.75 billion – Election operations

•N92.31 billion – Administrative costs

•N209.21 billion – Election technology costs

•N154.90 billion – Capital costs

•N41.61 billion – Miscellaneous expenses

 

Election operations account for the largest share of the proposed budget. This category typically covers logistics, transportation of personnel and materials, ad hoc staff recruitment and training, security coordination, printing of sensitive and non-sensitive materials, and nationwide deployment across Nigeria’s polling units.

 

 

Notably, N209.21 billion has been earmarked for election technology, reflecting INEC’s continued emphasis on digital innovation in the electoral process. This allocation is expected to cover the procurement, maintenance, and possible upgrade of technological tools such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), results transmission infrastructure, data management systems, cybersecurity frameworks, and other digital platforms aimed at strengthening transparency and efficiency.

 

The capital cost component of N154.90 billion is expected to address infrastructure needs, including equipment acquisition, storage facilities, and other long-term assets necessary for election management. Meanwhile, administrative expenses of N92.31 billion will cater to personnel, operational support, and institutional overheads. The remaining N41.61 billion categorized as miscellaneous expenses will likely accommodate contingencies and other unforeseen requirements.

 

 

The presentation of the proposed budget signals the commencement of early financial and operational planning for the 2027 polls. INEC has consistently emphasized that timely funding is critical to effective preparation, procurement processes, stakeholder engagement, and nationwide logistics coordination.

 

The proposal will now be subject to legislative scrutiny and approval by the National Assembly as part of the broader appropriation process.

 

If approved, the N873.78 billion allocation would represent one of the largest financial commitments to Nigeria’s electoral process, underscoring the scale, complexity, and technological evolution of elections in the country.
