Dignitaries Converge in Abuja to Mark 50 Years Since Murtala Muhammed’s Assassination
Prominent Nigerian leaders, former presidents, senior government officials and members of the diplomatic corps gathered in Abuja this week to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Murtala Ramat Muhammed.
The memorial events, convened by the Murtala Muhammed Foundation in partnership with other stakeholders, featured a lecture and leadership conference reflecting on the late general’s legacy. Among those in attendance were former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the Emir of Kano Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
Speakers paid tribute to Muhammed’s short but transformative tenure as Nigeria’s Head of State from July 1975 until his assassination on February 13, 1976. They highlighted his strong anti-corruption posture, sweeping public sector reforms and firm commitment to discipline, national unity and a return to civilian rule. His administration is widely remembered for decisive administrative changes that reshaped governance and repositioned Nigeria on the African stage.
The Abuja gathering formed part of a broader lineup of commemorative activities held across the country and beyond. Discussions centred on the enduring relevance of Muhammed’s ideals and the need for present-day leaders to uphold the values of accountability and principled leadership he espoused.
Other events marking the anniversary included wreath-laying ceremonies, special prayers and remembrance programmes in cities such as Lagos and Kano, where family members, public officials and community leaders honoured his memory.
Five decades after his death, General Murtala Muhammed remains one of Nigeria’s most revered post-independence leaders, remembered for his boldness, clarity of purpose and reform-driven leadership during a defining moment in the nation’s history.
