El-Rufai Sues ICPC for N1bn Over Alleged Abuja Home Invasion
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has filed a N1 billion lawsuit against the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), alleging that operatives of the commission unlawfully invaded his Abuja residence without a warrant.
El-Rufai, who governed Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023 and remains a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), claims the alleged invasion violated his fundamental rights and caused emotional distress as well as reputational damage. His legal team is seeking N1 billion in damages at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
According to court filings, the former governor argues that the operation was carried out without judicial authorisation, describing it as unlawful and inconsistent with constitutional protections on privacy, due process, and the rule of law.
The ICPC had previously initiated investigations into El-Rufai following petitions alleging abuse of office- claims he has consistently denied. He maintains that the commission’s actions have tarnished his image and compromised his personal security.
Legal observers note that the case could test the boundaries between anti-corruption enforcement and the protection of civil liberties, particularly in politically sensitive, high-profile matters.
The ICPC is yet to issue an official response to the lawsuit.
