El-Rufai’s Lawyer Faults ICPC Over Alleged Cairo Property Claims
The legal team of Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, has criticised the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over reports linking him to alleged properties in Cairo, Egypt.
In a statement, the lawyer accused the anti-corruption agency of leaking unverified information to the media while his client remains in custody. He said the claims circulating about El-Rufai allegedly owning multiple properties in Cairo are being used to damage his reputation without proper investigation or supporting evidence.
According to the lawyer, if the ICPC has credible evidence against the former governor, the agency should formally file charges in court rather than allow allegations to circulate through media reports.
He also called for El-Rufai’s immediate release, arguing that his continued detention without clearly stated charges amounts to a violation of his fundamental rights.
The defence team further warned that the alleged leaks risk shaping public opinion and undermining due process, stressing that investigations should remain confidential until formal charges are officially filed in court.
The ICPC has yet to respond publicly to the allegations regarding the reported media leaks.
