The Federal Government on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, signed and unveiled a fresh agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), a development aimed at resolving protracted disputes that have repeatedly disrupted academic calendars in public universities across Nigeria.
The signing ceremony was held in Abuja after months of negotiations between government officials and ASUU leadership. The deal builds on resolutions reached in December 2025, when both parties concluded talks on several outstanding concerns.
Under the agreement, the government pledged to increase funding for public universities, address the payment and restructuring of academic staff allowances, boost support for research and infrastructure, and introduce measures to improve industrial relations within the tertiary education sector. Officials said implementation of key aspects of the deal is expected to commence in January 2026.
ASUU described the agreement as an important step towards restoring stability to Nigeria’s university system but emphasised that its impact would depend on faithful and timely implementation. While education stakeholders and student groups have welcomed the development, many remain cautiously optimistic, pointing to previous agreements that were signed but not fully implemented.
Both the government and ASUU also announced plans to establish a joint monitoring framework to oversee implementation and reduce the likelihood of future disputes that could result in nationwide strikes.
