Fire Guts Qur’anic School in Birnin Kebbi, 142 Students Evacuated Safely
A fire outbreak has razed parts of the Nurul Haqq Qur’anic and Arabic School in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, forcing the evacuation of 142 students from the boarding facility.
The incident occurred on Saturday night, destroying several hostels and classrooms within the school premises. Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, who was reportedly passing through the area at the time, noticed thick smoke billowing from the school and immediately ordered his convoy to stop and assist.
The governor joined emergency responders at the scene and supervised the evacuation of the pupils to safer locations within the town. Officials confirmed that all 142 students were accounted for, with no casualties or injuries recorded.
Firefighters from the Kebbi State Fire Service battled the blaze for several hours, successfully preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings.
In response to the incident, Governor Idris directed the immediate constitution of a high-powered committee to investigate the cause of the fire and recommend measures to strengthen safety standards in schools across the state.
Preliminary findings suggest that gas cylinders found in some of the students’ rooms may have intensified the fire, raising fresh concerns about safety practices in boarding facilities. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to enforcing stricter fire safety regulations in educational institutions.
