Hundreds Stranded as Passenger Train Collides With Freight Train on Kaduna–Abuja Rail Line

Hundreds of passengers were left stranded after a passenger train collided with a freight train along the Kaduna–Abuja rail corridor on Monday, disrupting movement on one of Nigeria’s busiest rail routes.

The incident reportedly occurred along the standard gauge railway linking Kaduna to Abuja, a line widely used by commuters travelling between the Federal Capital Territory and Kaduna State.

According to eyewitness accounts, the passenger train ran into a freight train already on the track, forcing the train to halt abruptly and leaving passengers unable to continue their journey. While the full circumstances surrounding the collision are still being investigated, early reports indicate that the impact caused a major disruption to scheduled services on the route.

Passengers on board the affected train were said to have remained stranded for hours as officials and railway authorities worked to assess the situation and coordinate rescue and evacuation efforts.

Some passengers reportedly disembarked and waited along the tracks while officials tried to resolve the disruption. Videos and photos circulating on social media show large numbers of commuters gathered near the railway line as they awaited further instructions from railway personnel.

The Kaduna–Abuja rail line, operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation, serves thousands of passengers daily and is considered a safer and faster alternative to road travel between the two cities.

As of the time of filing this report, railway authorities had yet to release an official statement detailing the cause of the collision, the extent of the damage, or whether there were any casualties.

Passengers and commuters have called on relevant authorities to quickly address the disruption and provide clearer information, as many rely on the rail service for daily travel between Abuja and Kaduna.

Officials are expected to carry out a full investigation into the incident to determine what led to the collision and to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
