At Least Six Killed as Fire Engulfs Karachi Shopping Mall

At least six people have lost their lives and more than 20 others sustained injuries after a devastating fire swept through the Gul Plaza shopping mall in Karachi on Saturday night, January 17, 2026, as rescue operations stretched into the early hours of Sunday.

The fire broke out around 10:45 p.m. local time at the multi-storey commercial complex located on MA Jinnah Road, one of the city’s busiest districts. According to officials, the blaze originated from ground-floor shops and rapidly spread to the upper levels of the building, which houses over 1,200 retail outlets.

Emergency responders battled the inferno throughout the night, deploying more than 20 fire tenders and multiple snorkel units. However, intense heat, heavy smoke, and the risk of structural collapse significantly hindered rescue and search efforts. Large sections of the mall were destroyed, and authorities warned that the building remains structurally unsafe.

Preliminary assessments suggest the fire may have been triggered by an electrical short circuit, though officials say a comprehensive investigation is underway. The presence of highly flammable materials; including clothing, plastics, and household goods was cited as a key factor in the rapid spread of the flames.

The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, with several reported to be in critical condition. Dozens of people were also evacuated from the upper floors during the operation. Provincial authorities have activated mass disaster protocols, mobilising additional resources to support rescue efforts and assist affected families.

National and provincial leaders have expressed condolences to the victims’ families, pledging support and calling for stricter enforcement of fire safety standards in commercial buildings.
