INEC: Transparent Political Parties Key to Credible 2027 Elections
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has said that the integrity of Nigeria’s elections starts with political parties conducting their affairs transparently and in line with the law.
Amupitan made this known at the weekend as political parties gear up for their primaries scheduled to take place between April 23 and May 30 ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He disclosed that INEC is currently reviewing its guidelines and regulations for political parties to ensure full alignment with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and to reflect emerging electoral realities.
According to him, the proposed adjustments will cover key areas such as party administration, candidate nomination procedures, compliance requirements, dispute resolution processes, and the Commission’s regulatory responsibilities.
The INEC chairman reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process but cautioned against unrealistic expectations. He acknowledged that while the Commission is working to deliver the best possible elections, achieving a completely flawless exercise may not be immediately attainable.
“What Nigerians desire is a perfect election, and INEC will strive as much as possible to give this country the best election. However, we may not be able to achieve a 100 per cent perfect election for now,” he said.
