Kano Police Halt Tashe Performances for 2026 Ramadan Over Security Fears
The Kano State Police Command has suspended the annual Tashe traditional performances across Kano for the 2026 Ramadan season, citing growing security concerns.
In a statement released in the state capital, the command said the move is aimed at preventing potential breakdowns of law and order during the holy month, a period when large crowds typically gather for the cultural festivities.
Tashe is a longstanding Ramadan tradition in Kano and other parts of northern Nigeria. It features groups of young people staging street drama, drumming, and other forms of entertainment in neighbourhoods after the evening meal to break the fast. While widely embraced as a cultural expression tied to the Ramadan period, authorities have in previous years linked the gatherings to incidents involving crowd control challenges, youth clashes, and other security breaches.
Police officials said the temporary suspension is a precautionary measure designed to safeguard lives and property and ensure residents observe a peaceful Ramadan.
The command also called on community leaders, parents, and guardians to cooperate with security agencies by discouraging gatherings that could pose safety risks.
Although no indication was given on whether the restriction would extend beyond the 2026 Ramadan period, authorities confirmed that security monitoring would remain active throughout the fasting month.
