Lagos Hospital Accused of Medical Negligence in Death of Chimamanda Adichie’s Toddler
A Lagos-based medical facility, Euracare Multispecialist Hospital, has been accused of medical negligence by the family of acclaimed Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie following the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi.
Nkanu died on January 7, 2026, after he was taken to Euracare Hospital in Victoria Island for diagnostic procedures and sedation ahead of further treatment after a brief illness. According to statements attributed to Adichie and her family, the toddler allegedly received excessive sedation and was inadequately monitored, resulting in a denial of oxygen that caused him to become unresponsive and suffer seizures. The family said he later died from complications, including a heart attack.
Speaking on Arise TV, Adichie’s sister-in-law, Dr Anthea Nwandu, claimed the hospital’s medical director acknowledged that the child had been over-sedated. She also raised concerns about the handling of his care, including claims that he was transported without appropriate clinical observation. The family further alleged that Nkanu sustained brain injury due to lack of oxygen and said they are seeking accountability and transparency as investigations continue.
Euracare Multispecialist Hospital has expressed “deepest sympathies” to the family but disputed aspects of the allegations, stating that some reports contain inaccuracies. The hospital said the child arrived in a critical condition after receiving treatment at two paediatric centres and that all care provided followed established clinical protocols and “internationally accepted medical standards,” including the use of sedation where medically indicated. Euracare added that a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is ongoing.
Adichie and her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, had earlier announced the death of their son and requested privacy as the family mourns.
