Lagos State Government Cancels Greater Lagos Fiesta 2025
The Lagos State Government (LASG) has announced the cancellation of the 2025 Greater Lagos Fiesta, which was scheduled to hold on December 31, 2025.
The decision was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, following approval by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
According to the statement, the Governor directed that instead of the traditional Greater Lagos Fiesta (Countdown 2026), residents of the state should use the period to engage in personal prayers for the nation, Lagos State, and the wellbeing of its people.
Governor Sanwo-Olu encouraged Lagosians to pray for the state’s continued prosperity, peace, productivity, leadership, and overall wellbeing, describing the moment as one that calls for reflection and unity.
Message to Lagosians
While announcing the cancellation, the Governor expressed optimism about the future, assuring residents that 2026 holds great promise for Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole.
He urged Lagosians to continue to live together in peace and harmony, reiterating his administration’s commitment to delivering improved governance and services in the coming year.
“On behalf of my family, I wish every resident of our dear State a happy and prosperous New Year,” the Governor said.
“I want to assure you all that the year 2026 will be a better year for us in the State, as our administration is determined to work twice as hard to deliver the goods for the residents.”
Background
The Greater Lagos Fiesta is an annual end-of-year celebration that usually attracts large crowds across multiple locations in the state. The 2025 edition would have marked the official countdown to 2026.
The government, however, did not announce an alternative public celebration, emphasizing instead a call for reflection, prayer, and collective hope for the new year.
