Military Launches Operation Savannah Shield After Deadly Attack in Kwara
The Nigerian military has commenced a fresh security offensive in Kwara State following last week’s deadly terrorist attack on the Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area, which reportedly claimed more than 100 lives.
The operation, codenamed Operation Savannah Shield, was launched after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ordered the immediate deployment of a full battalion of troops to the affected area in response to the massacre. The move is part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to curb the growing threat of terrorism and violent extremism in parts of the North-Central region.
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) confirmed that the operation has officially begun and will extend beyond Kwara State to cover parts of neighbouring Niger State, where security concerns have also intensified in recent months.
According to the military, Operation Savannah Shield is aimed at flushing out terrorist elements, dismantling their enclaves, and restoring peace to communities affected by the violence. The operation will also focus on tracking down and apprehending those responsible for the attack on Woro community.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, expressed the Armed Forces’ condolences to the families of the victims and residents of the affected communities.
He reaffirmed the military’s commitment to protecting lives and property, noting that troops have been given clear directives to conduct sustained operations until normalcy is fully restored.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain resolute in their determination to bring the perpetrators of these heinous acts to justice and to ensure lasting peace in the region,” the statement said.
The attack on Woro community had sparked outrage and renewed calls for decisive military action, as residents decried the scale of destruction and loss of life.
Security analysts say the launch of Operation Savannah Shield signals a renewed push by the Federal Government to strengthen security presence in vulnerable rural communities and prevent further attacks.
