Nigeria Customs Seizes Live Pangolins, Warns Wildlife Traffickers
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has issued a strong warning to wildlife traffickers following the seizure of live Pangolin during a recent anti-smuggling operation.
Customs officials said the interception forms part of intensified efforts to combat illegal wildlife trade, a growing environmental and security concern in Nigeria and across West Africa. The rescued animals—identified as pangolins, one of the world’s most trafficked mammals—were recovered alive and are expected to be handed over to conservation authorities for care and possible rehabilitation.
The NCS stressed that trafficking in endangered species violates both national laws and international agreements, warning that offenders will face strict legal consequences. Authorities also reaffirmed their commitment to tightening surveillance across ports and border points to dismantle smuggling networks.
Wildlife experts have long flagged Nigeria as a key transit hub for illegal wildlife products, particularly pangolin scales and ivory, often destined for markets in Asia.
The seizure underscores renewed enforcement efforts by authorities to protect endangered species and curb transnational environmental crime.
