Nigeria Issues Heavy Rain and Flood Alert for 10 States as Rains Intensify
The Federal Government has issued a warning of potential flooding across 10 states following forecasts of heavy rainfall between April 8 and April 12, 2026. Authorities are urging residents to take precautionary measures as thunderstorms and intense rains are expected in multiple regions.
According to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), moderate to heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms are likely in northern, central, and southern parts of the country. These weather conditions increase the risk of flash floods and waterlogging, particularly in low-lying and poorly drained areas.
Public safety advisories have been issued for the following states: Kaduna, Taraba, Borno, Gombe, Adamawa, Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa, Niger, Lagos, Cross River, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Meteorologists noted that while these conditions are consistent with seasonal weather patterns, atmospheric disturbances could intensify rainfall, raising the risk of localized flooding in vulnerable communities.
Residents in high-risk areas have been advised to:
•Clear drains and waterways to reduce waterlogging
•Secure loose objects to prevent damage
•Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy downpours
•Follow guidance from local disaster management agencies
NiMet further warned that heavy rainfall events like this have historically caused displacement, infrastructure damage, and disruption to economic activities, particularly in areas with limited preparedness. Authorities emphasize the importance of vigilance and proactive measures to mitigate potential impacts.
