Omokri Reacts as Sowore’s Lawyers Question DSS Clearance Over Past Tinubu Remarks
Ambassador-designate Reno Omokri has responded to comments made by the defence team of Omoyele Sowore during an ongoing trial, in which his clearance by the Department of State Services (DSS) was questioned despite his past criticisms of President Bola Tinubu.
In a strongly worded statement cited by TVC News on Wednesday, Omokri addressed submissions made in court by Sowore and his counsel, Abubakar Marshal, during proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, January 27, 2026. The defence had challenged the DSS over Omokri’s clearance for an ambassadorial appointment, citing his previous remarks about Tinubu on national television.
The issue arose when Sowore’s lead counsel referenced comments allegedly made by Omokri in which he described Tinubu as a “drug lord,” a claim Omokri dismissed as false and misleading. Responding, Omokri acknowledged that he had made uncomplimentary statements about Tinubu during the 2023 election period, when Tinubu was the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress.
“I do freely admit that I made uncomplimentary remarks about the then presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, believing those comments to be true at the time I made them,” Omokri said. However, he explained that he later discovered the claims were untrue and subsequently retracted them.
According to Omokri, he publicly withdrew the remarks through several media platforms and clarified his position, stressing that his later actions were based on facts that emerged after his initial statements.
