Six Security Personnel Killed in Militants’ Ambush in Northwest Nigeria
At least six security personnel five Nigerian soldiers and one police officer were killed in an ambush by suspected militants on Monday, January 19, 2026, along the Bingi–Kekun Waje–Gusau Road in Zamfara State, northwest Nigeria, the military confirmed on Tuesday.
The victims were members of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, a joint military task force battling armed groups in the region. According to the Nigerian Army, the troops were returning from coordinated offensive operations carried out between January 17 and 19 in Birnin Magaji and Anka areas when they were attacked near Gidan Wagni while responding to reports of a reprisal assault.
The Army said earlier operations recorded some gains, including the arrest of three suspects, the neutralisation of four militants, and the recovery of arms and ammunition. However, suspected bandits or extremist fighters later ambushed the troops, killing six personnel and wounding several others.
Following the attack, reinforcements including the OPFY Mobile Strike Team and a Quick Reaction Force were deployed to the area. The assailants were engaged and forced to retreat, as security operations continue to restore stability.
The military reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and sustaining pressure on militant groups operating in northwest Nigeria.
