President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday charged the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Olatunji Disu, to urgently restore peace and strengthen internal security across the country.
The President gave the charge during the decoration of Mr. Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police at the State House, following the retirement of the former IGP, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, and pending ratification by the Nigeria Police Council and confirmation by the Senate. The Police Council is expected to meet next week.
“I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor,” President Tinubu said.
Describing the appointment as coming at a critical moment, the President urged the Acting IGP to rebuild public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force through professionalism, fairness, and effective collaboration with other security agencies.
“Lead firmly but fairly. Demand professionalism at every level and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority. It’s a daunting challenge. I know you can do it. You have my word; you have my full support,” the President stated.
President Tinubu further charged Mr. Disu to advance the security pillars of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, expressing confidence in his discipline, operational experience, and leadership capacity.
“Nigeria is challenged with banditry, terrorism, and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation required to overcome them,” he said, reaffirming his belief that the nation would prevail under committed leadership.
The President also paid tribute to the outgoing Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, who was present at the event with his spouse.
“To the outgoing Inspector-General, we are a grateful nation. Nigeria appreciates your contribution to maintaining law and order,” President Tinubu said.
He urged Mr. Egbetokun to remain available to offer advice to his successor and wished him and his family peace, good health, and success in future endeavours.
“You have not succeeded without a good successor. His success will also be part of your legacy,” the President added.
President Tinubu called on all security stakeholders to work collectively to safeguard lives and property during this critical period.
Those present at the decoration included the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila; the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori; retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Hakeem Odumosu; senior government officials; as well as the parents and family members of the Acting Inspector-General of Police.
