WIKE’S ARISE TV SHOWDOWN: RAINBOW COALITION, TINUBU AND THE BATTLE BEHIND NIGERIA’S 2027 ELECTION

The 2027 political battle moved another step closer to the centre stage on Tuesday night when FCT Minister Nyesom Wike appeared on ARISE News’ Prime Time and fired back at the APC Governors’ Forum over his controversial Rainbow Coalition.
Wike did not sound like a politician retreating, he sounded like a politician drawing a line his message was clear: his support is for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election, not for the APC as a political organisation. He also maintained that the PDP remains free to field candidates for governorship, National Assembly and State Assembly elections in 2027. That position directly clashes with the APC Governors’ Forum. Led by Imo State Governor *Hope Uzodimma*, the governors said they would not support any political arrangement capable of weakening APC candidates or creating divided loyalty within the ruling party.
Then Wike delivered the line that turned the disagreement into political theatre:
“They are politically lazy.”
He argued that governors should solve their own political problems instead of using President Tinubu’s re-election as an excuse to attack his coalition. THE REAL DISPUTE IS NOT TINUBU
On the surface, both camps support the same presidential objective. Wike says he is mobilising for Tinubu. The APC governors say they support Tinubu. So why the confrontation? Because the disagreement is really about what happens below the presidency. The APC’s preferred model is straightforward: support Tinubu and strengthen APC candidates across the ballot. Wike’s model is different. He believes voters can support Tinubu for President while choosing candidates from other parties for governor, Senate or House of Representatives, He pointed to the 2023 elections in states including Imo, Abia, Ebonyi and Enugu, where voters supported different parties at presidential and legislative levels in other words, Wike is betting on tickets-plitting.
TINUBU KNOWS Perhaps the most politically significant revelation from the interview was Wike’s assertion that President Tinubu is aware of his Rainbow Coalition activities. “There is nothing that I do that I don’t tell Mr. President,” Wike said, according to reports of the interview that statement changes the political interpretation of the coalition If Wike is correct, the Rainbow Coalition is not simply an individual political project operating outside the knowledge of the presidency It is a political strategy whose existence is known at the highest level but that does not automatically mean that every APC governor is comfortable with it and therein lies the problem.
THE WIKE FACTOR
Wike has never been a conventional politician, He has demonstrated an ability to operate across political boundaries while maintaining his own political identity, He remains a PDP figure he serves in an APC-led federal administration, he supports Tinubu and He is simultaneously insisting that the PDP should remain politically active outside the presidential contest. That makes him useful to the President’s coalition-building strategy but potentially uncomfortable for party managers.
THE 2027 QUESTION
The emerging battle may therefore be bigger than Wike versus Uzodimma It is about the architecture of 2027 will the election be primarily a contest between political parties? Or will it increasingly become a contest between political personalities, regional networks, coalitions and individual voter choices? The answer could determine how parties organise their campaigns Because if Wike’s strategy works, politicians may discover that a presidential coalition does not necessarily translate into automatic support for every candidate carrying the ruling party’s platform that would fundamentally change Nigerian electoral calculations.
EKOCITY ANALYSIS
The most interesting part of Wike’s Arise TV appearance was not his attack on the APC governors It was the political philosophy behind his argument. Wike is effectively saying: Support whoever you believe deserves the presidency. Then make your own decision about the rest of the ballot the APC Governors’ Forum is effectively saying: If you are supporting our President, you should not simultaneously build a structure that could weaken our candidates both positions can coexist politically but they cannot coexist comfortably inside the same electoral machine and that is why the Rainbow Coalition controversy matters Nigeria’s 2027 election is beginning to reveal a new political equation: Tinubu’s presidential coalition may become broader than the APC itself.
The unanswered question is whether the APC will see that as an advantage or as a threat for now, Wike is not backing down and neither, it appears, are the governors. The political chessboard has been opened. 2027 has officially entered another phase.
