Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was the guest speaker as the Yoruba Tennis Club celebrated its centenary anniversary with a gathering of prominent Lagosians, political leaders and members of the historic club in Onikan.

LAGOS A century of history, friendship and civic engagement took centre stage in Lagos on Tuesday as the Yoruba Tennis Club marked its 100th anniversary with a commemorative lecture and anniversary celebration in Onikan. The event brought together Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, his deputy and APC governorship candidate, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, members of the Lagos State Government, political leaders and prominent members of the club.

Governor Sanwo-Olu served as guest speaker at the centenary anniversary lecture, which celebrated the institution’s long history while reflecting on its continuing place within Lagos’ social and civic landscape. The governor joined club leaders for the ceremonial cutting of the anniversary ribbon, marking a symbolic moment in the club’s centenary celebrations. Among those present were the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Mrs. ‘Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin; Lagos APC Chairman, Hon. Cornelius Ojelabi; Chairman of Yoruba Tennis Club, Bro. Chief Engr. Olawunmi Gasper; past chairman Bro. Ayodele Martins; and other distinguished members and guests.

The commemorative programme also featured the signing of an anniversary board by Governor Sanwo-Olu and Dr. Hamzat, while the governor’s wife, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, also signed the board as part of the celebration. The gathering provided an opportunity for members and guests to reflect on the enduring legacy of an institution that has remained part of Lagos’ evolving social history for 100 years. The presence of the governor and senior government officials also underscored the significance attached to the centenary milestone, coming at a time when Lagos continues to balance its historic institutions with the demands of a rapidly changing metropolis.

For the Yoruba Tennis Club, the centenary was more than an anniversary. It was a celebration of continuity — a moment to honour the generations that built and sustained the institution while looking ahead to the responsibilities that accompany another century.
