FG Pays N1.2 Trillion of N2.3 Trillion Debt to Electricity Operators

The Federal Government has paid N1.2 trillion out of the N2.3 trillion owed to electricity operators, as part of efforts to ease liquidity challenges affecting power generation and gas supply.

Joseph Tegbe, Minister of Power, said the payments were aimed at reducing outstanding financial obligations in the electricity sector, while the government continues to pursue transmission infrastructure upgrades and alternative energy projects to improve power supply.

Tegbe disclosed that a nationwide technical audit of electricity infrastructure was underway to identify ageing facilities and determine which installations require urgent rehabilitation and upgrades.

He added that the country had been divided into three energy zones to guide government interventions, strengthen transmission capacity and improve electricity delivery across different regions.

According to the minister, Lagos and its surrounding areas account for approximately 50 per cent of Nigeria’s electricity demand, while other zones include Abuja, Kano and locations where improvements in transmission infrastructure and power supply are needed.
