The Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) foreign exchange sales fell sharply to $1.67 billion in the first half (H1) of 2026, down from $5.41 billion recorded in the corresponding period of 2025, amid rising private-sector inflows and ongoing reforms in the foreign exchange market.

The $3.73 billion decline represents the lowest level of recorded FX sales in the five years under review, according to data from the CBN’s statistical bulletin.

The drop in the apex bank’s forex sales comes against the backdrop of growing foreign exchange inflows into the country.

Adebowale Funmi, Head of Research at Parthian Securities, said total FX inflows increased by 12.7 per cent to $63.82 billion in H1 2026, with autonomous sources contributing $45.5 billion.
