Suspected Suicide of Ondo Businessman Highlights Nigeria’s Growing Mental Health Concerns
The reported death of an Ondo-based businessman, Akinbolusere Kayode, popularly known as Tolufe, in a suspected suicide incident has renewed concerns about mental health challenges and suicide prevention in Nigeria.
Kayode, the owner of Esther Estate in Ondo town, Ondo State, was reported dead on Thursday, October 29, 2026, although the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.
Before his reported death, the businessman allegedly recorded a video that later circulated on Facebook. In the video, he reportedly spoke about his family, business challenges and his decision to bequeath his properties to his wife and three children.
His death has drawn attention to the mental health challenges confronting Nigerians, particularly the pressures associated with financial difficulties, family responsibilities and personal struggles.
Data from the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals database estimated Nigeria’s suicide mortality rate at five deaths per 100,000 people in 2021. However, the actual figures may be higher, as suicide cases are often underreported due to social stigma, cultural attitudes and gaps in death registration.
The figures highlight the need for stronger mental health support systems, improved access to professional counselling and greater public awareness about suicide prevention.
Mental health advocates have consistently called for an environment where individuals experiencing emotional distress can seek help without fear of discrimination or judgment.
The reported incident in Ondo further underscores the importance of recognising mental health as a public health concern and strengthening support for people facing psychological, financial and personal difficulties.
However, the circumstances surrounding Kayode’s death have yet to be independently established.
