A Nigerian-born medical doctor, Dr. Babaseyi “Seyi” Oyesola, has co-developed a portable, solar-powered mini hospital designed to deliver life-saving surgical care to hard-to-reach and underserved communities.
Dr. Oyesola, an anaesthesiologist and critical care specialist, collaborated with other experts in the mid-2000s to create the Compact Operating Room, widely known as the “hospital in a box.” The innovation was conceived as a practical response to the lack of functional surgical facilities in regions where electricity supply and basic medical infrastructure are unreliable or entirely absent.
The system is a fully equipped mobile operating theatre that can be transported by road or air and assembled in roughly ten minutes. Once deployed, it provides a complete surgical environment, featuring essential equipment such as anaesthesia machines, defibrillators, electrocardiogram (EKG) monitors and surgical lighting. All components can operate on solar power or other off-grid energy sources, making the unit suitable for remote locations.
Since its introduction in 2007, the Compact Operating Room has been used to deliver critical surgical services in rural and isolated areas where conventional hospitals are inaccessible. The innovation has enabled emergency surgeries and other vital medical interventions outside major urban centres, helping to bridge long-standing gaps in healthcare access.
The “hospital in a box” highlights the growing role of African-led innovation in addressing local challenges through context-appropriate technology. It also demonstrates how renewable energy solutions can strengthen healthcare delivery in communities with limited or no access to electricity.
