Anger Boils Over as Mob Attacks Alleged “One-Chance” Operators in Abuja
A mob on Thursday attacked suspected “one-chance” operators in Abuja, following accusations that the individuals were involved in a series of robberies and abductions targeting unsuspecting commuters across the city.
Eyewitnesses said the suspects were confronted after residents raised an alarm over their alleged activities, which have become a growing source of fear for commuters, particularly in high-traffic areas and during early morning and late evening hours. The situation quickly escalated as angry youths and passersby descended on the suspects, accusing them of drugging victims, dispossessing them of valuables, and abandoning them in remote locations.
The attack triggered panic in the area, forcing motorists and pedestrians to flee for safety, while commercial activities were temporarily disrupted. Some residents justified the mob action as a response to what they described as the persistent failure to curb “one-chance” crimes, which continue to plague Abuja despite repeated warnings from security agencies.
Security operatives later arrived at the scene to restore order and prevent further violence. The suspects were reportedly rescued from the mob and taken into custody for investigation. Authorities have condemned jungle justice and urged residents to report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies rather than resort to mob action.
The police reiterated their commitment to tackling “one-chance” syndicates and called on commuters to remain vigilant, use only recognized transport services, and promptly share credible information that could aid ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating within the Federal Capital Territory.
