Sanwo-Olu Commissions Ultra-Modern Hostel Facilities at LASCON
The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Friday commissioned the Ultra-Modern hostel facilities at Lagos State College of Nursing (LASCON), Igando, in demonstration of his administration’s commitment to human capital development and strengthening the health care system in Lagos state.
The newly commissioned hostel, which can accommodate more than 250 students, is equipped with training and registration facilities, solar power infrastructure and round-the-clock CCTV surveillance.
Speaking during the commissioning of the facilities witnessed by the First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu; Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Mrs. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin; Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, top government officials, traditional and political leaders, Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare manpower and improving the welfare of students in tertiary institutions.
He also restated the commitment of the State Government to put in place infrastructure that would foster sustainable development to meet the medical requirements of the people.
The Governor said the construction of the hostel facilities goes beyond the provision of a physical structure, describing it as an investment in human capital development, student welfare and the quality of healthcare education.
He therefore urged the students, lecturers and management of LASCON to own, maintain and use the edifice well as it is equipped with various facilities. He also gave assurance on completion of other projects as the government plans to advance the school to award a full bachelor degree in Nursing.
Governor Sanwo-Olu described nurses as critical players in the healthcare ecosystem, noting that their dedication and expertise remain essential to meeting the healthcare needs of Lagos’ growing population.
Speaking further on Lagos State commitment to the education and health sectors, Governor Sanwo-Olu disclosed that his administration is pursuing approval for a University of Medical Sciences in Lagos State.
He said the proposed institution would expand Lagos State’s capacity to train doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals to address the shortage of skilled manpower in the health sector.
Speaking earlier, the Lagos State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, appreciated Governor Sanwo-Olu for his dedication to education in Lagos State. He also praised the incumbent administration’s investment in infrastructure, describing the new facility as a platform for empowering young people and developing the character and professionalism of future nurses.
He said the project demonstrates the government’s commitment to advancing tertiary education and creating an enabling environment for students to acquire the skills required to contribute meaningfully to society.
In her welcome address, the Provost of Lagos State College of Nursing, Igando, Dr Ayodeji Ogunmuyiwa, thanked Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration for its investments in the advancement of the institution and expanding its space as well as infrastructure in a bid to yielding a stronger health care system for the people calling for more support.
She said the new hostel would significantly strengthen the institution’s capacity to train more nurses at a time when Lagos and Nigeria continue to face healthcare manpower shortages.
Dr. Ogunmuyiwa highlighted LASCON’s recent achievements, including a 100 per cent success rate in professional examinations, an upgraded Information and Communication Technology centre and a modern Computer-Based Test centre for digital assessment.
