NERC Urges Consumers to Sell Excess Solar Power Under 2026 Net Billing Regulations
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has urged eligible electricity consumers to take advantage of its 2026 Net Billing Regulations, which allow them to supply surplus solar-generated electricity to the national grid in exchange for credits on their monthly bills.
The commission made the appeal in a post on its official X account, encouraging households and businesses with qualifying solar installations to review the regulations and confirm whether they meet the requirements to participate in the scheme.
Under the arrangement, consumers can generate electricity for their own use and export excess power to the network of their electricity distribution companies (DisCos).
In return, participating consumers receive credits for the surplus electricity supplied, which can be applied to reduce their monthly electricity bills.
The initiative is designed to encourage greater adoption of renewable energy, promote more efficient use of distributed solar power and provide financial benefits to consumers who generate electricity beyond their immediate needs.
The regulations also offer an opportunity for households and businesses with eligible solar systems to reduce their electricity costs while contributing additional power to the distribution network.
