The Emir of Kaiama in Kwara State, Alhaji Omar Muazu, has confirmed that no fewer than 75 victims of the recent bandit attack in the community have been laid to rest in a mass burial conducted according to Islamic rites, while others were taken to their respective hometowns for burial.
According to the Emir, at least 102 people have been confirmed killed in the attack, with an unverified number of residents abducted. He described the incident as the worst massacre in Nigeria’s history.
The monarch disclosed that Woro town, one of the affected communities, has been completely deserted, turning into a ghost settlement. He added that an undisclosed number of women and children were among those kidnapped by the attackers.
The Emir revealed that the bandits had earlier sent a letter to the community, claiming they were coming to “preach.” However, the visit turned out to be a deadly deception, as the armed group instead unleashed a violent massacre on the residents.
He further stated that the same group had previously kidnapped two Chinese nationals and killed a Nigerian soldier in the area. The Emir appealed to the federal government to establish a permanent military base to secure Kaiama and the Kainji National Lake axis, which he said serves as a hideout for the bandits.
Meanwhile, Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, visited the affected community to commiserate with residents over the attack that claimed more than 100 lives. During the visit, the governor announced that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the immediate deployment of a battalion of soldiers to the area to restore security and prevent further attacks.
