President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday assured Nigerians that his administration remains committed to defeating terrorism and banditry, describing these threats as “unacceptable” and alien to the nation’s values. Speaking in Abuja, he emphasised that insecurity is a major impediment to Nigeria’s social and economic development.
The president made the remarks during his opening address at the second edition of the National Economic Council (NEC) Conference on Inclusive Growth and Sustainable National Development, where he highlighted how terrorism, banditry, and related violent crimes continue to hinder economic progress and investor confidence.
“It is what has kept all of us sleepless at night, but I assure you that we will win with determination and resiliency,” Tinubu said. “We will overcome this unacceptable terrorism and banditry; it’s not part of our culture, it’s foreign to us.”
President Tinubu commended state governors, particularly those of Borno, Katsina, and Kaduna, for their proactive efforts in protecting communities from attacks. He also stressed the importance of strengthening security forces, enhancing coordination among government agencies, and fostering collaboration between federal and sub-national authorities to effectively address insecurity.
Linking security to economic development, the president noted that sustained peace is essential for growth, investment, and national progress. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to working closely with security agencies and regional governments to restore stability in affected areas, while protecting the lives and livelihoods of citizens.
Tinubu’s assurance comes amid ongoing concerns over mass abductions, armed attacks, and other violent incidents that have continued to affect several states in the North-Central and North-East regions. Analysts say the president’s focus on coordinated security action and community engagement signals a strategic push to tackle insecurity comprehensively while fostering conditions for sustainable development.
