Fire Guts 10 Shops at Ogunpa Market in Ibadan
No fewer than 10 shops were completely destroyed by a fire outbreak on Monday night at the Iya Maryam Adebara Complex, located within the Ogunpa Market area of Ibadan, Oyo State.
Confirming the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday, the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Mr. Moroof Akinwande, said the agency received a distress call at about 8:11 p.m. from the Baale of Ogunpa, Alhaji Nurudeen Lawal, alerting authorities to the inferno.
Akinwande explained that firefighters were immediately deployed to the scene upon receiving the call. He noted that the prompt response of the agency’s officers helped to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other shops and nearby properties within the busy market area.
“Our officers swiftly swung into action and were able to curtail the fire, thereby saving several adjoining shops and buildings from being affected,” he said.
He added that the Federal Fire Service also collaborated with the state fire service in battling the fire, and their combined efforts ensured that the flames were fully extinguished.
While no casualties were reported, the incident resulted in the loss of goods and property worth millions of naira, as affected shop owners were left counting their losses.
The cause of the fire had not been immediately ascertained as of the time of filing this report, while authorities said investigations would be conducted to determine its origin.
