Protesters Storm National Assembly Over Electoral Integrity
Protesters on Monday gathered at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja to demand urgent reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s electoral integrity and safeguarding the credibility of future elections.
The demonstration, which began in the early hours of the day, was led by civil society groups, pro-democracy activists and concerned citizens who expressed dissatisfaction with what they described as persistent flaws in the country’s electoral process. The protesters carried placards bearing inscriptions such as “Protect Our Votes,” “No Democracy Without Credible Elections,” and “Electoral Integrity Is Non-Negotiable.”
Speaking to journalists at the scene, representatives of the group accused political actors and institutions of undermining democratic principles through electoral malpractice, voter suppression and weak enforcement of electoral laws. They called on the National Assembly to prioritise electoral reforms that would ensure transparency, accountability and the independence of electoral bodies.
The protesters specifically urged lawmakers to review existing electoral laws, strengthen sanctions against election offenders and ensure the full implementation of technology in elections to prevent manipulation of results.
Security operatives were deployed around the National Assembly Complex to maintain order and prevent a breakdown of law and order. The protest remained peaceful, with no reported incidents of violence as of the time of filing this report.
Efforts to get a reaction from officials of the National Assembly were unsuccessful, as no lawmaker addressed the protesters during the demonstration.
The protest comes amid growing public concern over the credibility of elections in Nigeria and renewed calls for reforms ahead of future electoral cycles.
