The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced January 16, 2027 as the new date for Nigeria’s next presidential election.
The electoral body disclosed the decision as part of its early preparations for the 2027 general elections, stating that the adjustment is aimed at improving logistical coordination, strengthening electoral planning, and ensuring a smoother voting process across the country.
Traditionally, Nigeria’s presidential elections have been held in February. However, INEC indicated that moving the date to mid-January would allow more time to manage post-election processes before the swearing-in of a new president on May 29, 2027. The Commission also noted that the shift would help address recurring operational challenges experienced in previous election cycles.
The announcement has already begun to generate reactions from political parties, civil society organisations, and election observers, many of whom are expected to scrutinise the legal and logistical implications of the new timeline.
