Chike Emembo: Crafting Innovation, Shaping the Future of Contemporary Art
For over two decades, Chike Emembo has built a career defined by reinvention, resilience, and quiet defiance. A trained multidisciplinary artist, he did not begin his journey with art as the plan. Raised with expectations of pursuing a career in petrochemical engineering, he initially followed the science path. But after secondary school, a pivotal turning point led him to study fine arts, a decision that would ultimately shape the course of his life.
What began as a practical choice soon evolved into a calling. After graduation and national service, Emembo co-founded a studio space, navigating an art industry that at the time offered little formal structure or institutional support. There were no clear roadmaps, limited mentorship opportunities, and few funding systems. Like many Nigerian artists of his generation, he relied on experimentation, exhibitions, and persistence to carve out space for himself. His first solo exhibition in 2009 marked a breakthrough and strengthened his resolve to continue building a career in the arts.
Over the years, his work has continued to evolve; both in subject matter and technique. Emembo is particularly known for his unconventional medium: textured foam sheets layered with acrylic, resin, and mixed materials. Unlike traditional sculpture, his pieces are lightweight and foldable, addressing practical challenges around transportation and international shipping. This innovation reflects not only resourcefulness but a deliberate desire to break away from the constraints of heavy, immovable forms while maintaining sculptural depth and presence.
Thematically, his art explores spirituality, social consciousness, love, and conversations often considered uncomfortable. He believes art should engage with difficult realities rather than avoid them, using form and texture to spark reflection. Each piece carries a distinct yet subtle signature that has become recognizably his.
Although Nigeria’s creative ecosystem has grown significantly in recent years, structural challenges remain, particularly in funding, policy implementation, and sustained private sector investment. Still, Emembo recognizes the progress made and remains optimistic about the future of the industry. Today, he runs a studio in a gallery space, while also mentoring emerging artists. Looking ahead, he envisions expanding his gallery, deepening research into his materials and techniques, and establishing a structured art school to nurture the next generation of creatives.
