Suspected Wike Loyalists Burn ADC Ward Office in Amaechi’s Rivers Hometown Ahead of Party Registration

Suspected political thugs on Friday set ablaze a ward office of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ubima community, the hometown of former Rivers State governor and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The attack reportedly occurred in the early hours of March 6, 2026, just hours before Amaechi was expected to formally register with the African Democratic Congress at the ward level in his community.

According to local sources, the attackers stormed the party office and set the building on fire, destroying furniture, documents and other materials meant for party activities and registration. No casualties were reported, but the office was largely destroyed in the blaze.

Residents in the area alleged that the perpetrators were loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, a long-time political rival of Amaechi. However, the claim had not been officially confirmed by authorities at the time of filing this report.

The incident has further heightened political tension in Rivers State, where rivalry between the camps of Amaechi and Wike has remained a defining feature of the state’s political landscape since both men served successively as governors between 2007 and 2023.

As of the time of this report, the Nigeria Police Force had not issued an official statement regarding the attack, and it remained unclear whether any arrests had been made.

The destruction of the ADC ward office has raised concerns among observers about the growing level of political hostility in the state ahead of emerging party realignments and grassroots political mobilisation.
