Court Grants N200m Bail to Former AGF Abubakar Malami, Wife and Son
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, his son Abdulaziz Malami, and his wife Asabe Bashir in the sum of N200 million each, with two sureties in like sum.
As part of the bail conditions, one of the sureties must deposit the title deeds of a property located in either Maitama or Asokoro, both highbrow areas of the Federal Capital Territory. The defendants were also ordered to surrender their international passports to the court.
Pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions, the court directed that they remain in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
The matter was adjourned until March 16 for the commencement of trial.
The ruling followed a bail application filed by the former AGF after he and the other defendants were re-arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The anti-graft agency had on February 27 re-arraigned them on a 16-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering.
All three defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges, prompting the court to adjourn the matter to March 6 for a ruling on the bail application.
