FAAN Confirms Arrest of Four Suspected Bandits Near Akure Airport

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has confirmed the arrest of four suspected bandits in the vicinity of Akure Airport following a coordinated security operation involving aviation security personnel and other law enforcement agencies.

In a statement issued late Sunday and signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, the authority disclosed that the arrests were made after security operatives received a distress alert about suspicious movements around the airport’s perimeter, particularly near the Eleyewo area.

According to FAAN, the alert prompted an immediate response from a joint security team tasked with safeguarding the airport and surrounding communities. The operation involved operatives from FAAN’s Aviation Security unit (AVSEC), the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, as well as local security outfits working within the area.

Agbebire explained that security personnel swiftly mobilised and launched a coordinated search and patrol operation around the airport’s boundary and nearby communities. During the operation, several individuals suspected to be bandits reportedly attempted to flee upon sighting the security operatives.

However, the joint security team was able to apprehend four of the suspects after a brief pursuit within the area. Authorities said the arrests were carried out without disrupting airport operations.

FAAN further confirmed that the suspects have since been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force Area Command for further interrogation and investigation to determine their activities in the area and whether they may be linked to any criminal network.

The authority reiterated its commitment to maintaining strict security around airports across the country and assured the public that it will continue to collaborate with relevant security agencies to ensure the safety of aviation facilities and surrounding communities.
