Gunmen Abduct UTME Candidates En Route to Exam in Benue
Fresh fears have emerged over the safety of students after gunmen abducted several candidates travelling to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in Benue State.
The attack occurred late Wednesday along the Makurdi–Otukpo road when a Benue Links bus conveying passengers was intercepted. Many of those on board were young candidates heading to Otukpo to write their exams scheduled for Thursday.
Reports indicate the vehicle carried about 18 passengers. While a few managed to escape during the attack , security sources confirmed that 14 people were taken into the bush by the attackers. One victim was later freed, and the driver reportedly escaped.
Security operatives have since launched a search-and-rescue operation, with personnel deployed across nearby forest areas to track down the abductors and secure the victims’ release.
Early findings suggest the bus may have travelled outside officially approved hours. State transport authorities have maintained restrictions on night journeys as a precaution against such incidents.
The Makurdi–Otukpo corridor has recorded a string of kidnappings in recent months, reinforcing concerns about the vulnerability of commuters.
Beyond the immediate incident, the abduction highlights a deeper issue: the risks many candidates face simply trying to access examination centres. With limited CBT facilities, students are often forced to travel long distances turning what should be a routine academic exercise into a dangerous journey.
